In a major step towards youth empowerment, the Central Government is launching the second phase of the PM Internship Yojana (PMIY) from August 1, 2025. Known as PM Internship-II, this scheme aims to connect lakhs of young Indians with industry-based internship opportunities, helping them build practical experience and improve their chances in future job markets.
Objective and Expansion of the Schem
The goal of this internship program is to create a strong bridge between education and employment. The government plans to partner with the top 500 industries across the country, targeting to offer internships to over 7 lakh youth by the year 2025–26.
Compared to the first phase, this number is significantly higher, showing the government’s intention to expand the program more widely and effectively.

Improvements in Phase 2
The second phase of the PM Internship Yojana comes with several improvements based on the feedback received from the first phase. One of the biggest changes is that the scheme will now be active year-round, meaning students can apply for internships online at any time, offering more flexibility and convenience.
Internship Process & Stipend Structure
Young aspirants will be given internship opportunities at the local level, with training in both government and private sector companies. The focus will be on hands-on, real-world experience.
Here’s how the stipend structure worked in Phase 1:
- The average stipend provided was around ₹15,000 per month.
- Some interns, especially those hired by top-tier firms, received ₹40,000 to ₹45,000 per month.
- The central government contributed up to ₹5,000, and the rest was paid by the companies.
What Happened in Phase 1?
During the first phase of the PM Internship Yojana:
- Over 60,000 students received internship offers.
- 28,000 proposals were approved, and
- Nearly 8,700 students began their internships.
However, several challenges were reported:
- Some companies delayed hiring and failed to onboard interns on time.
- The internship window was just 45 days, leading to rushed procedures.
- Although 82,000 proposals were made, only 28,000 were approved, limiting participation.
What’s New in Phase 2
This time, several key upgrades are being implemented:
- Internship duration will now be year-round, allowing students to apply anytime.
- The selection process will be simplified and faster to avoid delays.
- More companies will be onboarded, increasing the number of opportunities.
